Description

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) intends to negotiate a purchase order with Cox Analytical Systems for an X-ray fluorescence core scanner. The scanner should be capable of analyzing both marine sediment and mineral cores, and have the ability to analyze elements from magnesium through uranium or better with high precision and sensitivity to both heavy and light elements. The scanner should also have appropriate safety shielding for x-rays, energy resolution of 3% or better, and be equipped with an RGB camera that collects images paired to the XRF scan at a resolution of 50 micrometers or better. The USGS is soliciting this purchase from a single source because Cox Analytical Systems is, to their knowledge, the only source who can provide a machine known to analyze both wet and dry cores. Some key features of the XRF include: • An X-ray fluorescence core scanner capable of analyzing both marine sediment and mineral cores • The ability to analyze both wet and dry cores • The ability to analyze elements from magnesium through uranium or better with high precision and sensitivity to both heavy and light elements • The ability to analyze samples up to 1.5 m in length at 1 mm resolution or better • Appropriate safety shielding for x-rays • Energy resolution of 3% or better • An RGB camera that collects images paired to the XRF scan at a resolution of 50 micrometers or better • A one-year standard warranty, as well as product installation and appropriate user training

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $500,000

The budget for this opportunity is likely to be in the range of $100,000 to $500,000, considering the complexity and specialized nature of the XRF. The factors that may influence the likely payment range include the cost of the XRF itself, the cost of installation and training, and the cost of any additional features or accessories. The document does not specify the exact budget, but it does mention that the award will be made in accordance with the procedures at RFO Part 12, which may provide some guidance on the payment terms.
