The purpose of SuRE-First awards is to provide support for investigator-initiated research at resource-limited institutions by full-time faculty who have not had any prior independent, peer-reviewed, external research grants, to furnish students with high-quality undergraduate and/or graduate research experiences, and to enhance the institutional scientific research culture. Key aspects of this opportunity include: * Support for research capacity building at eligible higher education institutions * Funding for investigator-initiated biomedical research in various fields * Focus on resource-limited institutions and full-time faculty without prior independent research grants * Goals of furnishing high-quality research experiences for students and enhancing institutional scientific research culture * Eligibility is open to institutions of higher education that award undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in biomedical sciences, have received no more than $6 million in NIH Research Project Grants in the preceding two fiscal years, and enroll at least 25% of undergraduate students supported by Pell grants.
