Description

The College of William & Mary is seeking a qualified firm to design, fabricate, test, and deliver a large‑diameter (≈ 9 ft) aluminum Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) Rotator Ferris Wheel assembly for use at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA. The contract is a sealed‑bid RFP that will be awarded on the basis of technical capability, experience with precision large‑scale aluminum machining, and price. The vendor must demonstrate capability to machine 108‑inch diameter rings to ±0.005 in tolerance, provide CNC, vertical‑turning‑lathe and horizontal‑boring‑mill capacity, perform dry‑fit assembly of the 10.5‑ft tall structure, supply full material certifications, and ship the completed components to the DOE facility. The contract term is one year with up‑to‑four optional one‑year renewals (maximum five years). • Fabricate three 6061‑T6 aluminum wheels (≈ 9 ft OD) and fourteen module‑holder brackets, all all‑bolted, no‑weld construction. • Perform final OD machining, dry‑fit assembly, and provide certificates of conformance, inspection reports, and material traceability. • Deliver the assembled (or half‑ring) components to Jefferson Lab, with on‑site witness inspection available.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $3,000,000

No contract value is disclosed, but custom 9‑ft precision aluminum structures with tight tolerances, extensive QA, and shipping to a federal lab typically range from several hundred thousand to a few million dollars. Assuming three wheels, multiple braces, extensive testing, and a one‑year term, a reasonable estimate is $500 k‑$3 M.
