Description

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking commercialization partners for its Cryogenic DT Fusion Pellet Injection System. The system includes several patent-pending technologies, including a cryogenic extrusion recirculation system, a tritium-compatible cryogenic screw extruder, a tritium-compatible cryogenic pellet gas gun, and a pressure relief device for cryogenic fusion fuels. The selected partner will be responsible for licensing and commercializing these technologies. The scope of work includes the development and implementation of the Cryogenic DT Fusion Pellet Injection System, which is used for the continuous production of deuterium-tritium (D-T) fusion fuel pellets. The system requires the use of cryogenic temperatures, tritium-compatible materials, and precise control of continuous pellet formation. Key features of the system include: • Cryogenic extrusion recirculation system with a cryogenically-cooled extruder and auger • Tritium-compatible cryogenic screw extruder with a cryogenically-cooled barrel and hermetic separation • Tritium-compatible cryogenic pellet gas gun with a pellet sizer assembly and dual flexible metal bellows seals • Pressure relief device with a valve body, valve housing, and tapered valve seal The partner will need to have experience in the development and commercialization of complex technologies, particularly in the field of cryogenic systems and fusion energy.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $5,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as it depends on the terms of the licensing agreement and the commercialization of the technologies. However, based on the complexity of the technologies and the potential applications in the field of fusion energy, the budget could be substantial. A rough estimate could be in the range of $500,000 to $5,000,000, depending on the scope of the licensing agreement and the success of the commercialization efforts. Factors that may influence the likely payment range include the level of investment required for commercialization, the potential market demand for the technologies, and the competitive landscape in the field of fusion energy.
