The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is providing grants to support the development and/or implementation of Great Lakes Tribal Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plans. The grants will be awarded through a competitive process, and only Great Lakes tribes or their designees are eligible to apply. The proposed work must either be within the Great Lakes Basin or near enough to the basin to contribute substantially to the prevention and/or control of aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes. The program goals include funding projects that prevent the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species, detect and respond to introductions, and control established populations. Key considerations for the grant review process include the potential for the proposed activity to substantially address vectors for AIS infiltration, implement early detection efforts, implement rapid response efforts, implement containment efforts, and reduce the abundance of established AIS. The grant review process will also consider the qualifications of the applicant, the potential for long-term societal, economic, and environmental sustainability, and the degree to which the plan for carrying out the proposed activities is well-reasoned and based on sound science.
