The Museum Grants for African American History and Culture program is designed to build the capacity of African American museums and support the growth and development of museum professionals at African American museums. The program supports projects that nurture museum professionals, build institutional capacity, and increase access to museum and archival collections at African American museums and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Some possible projects that may be funded include:
• General conservation surveys to assess the condition of museum collections and identify conservation needs
• Detailed conservation surveys to examine the condition of specific collections or objects
• Environmental surveys to assess the environmental conditions in exhibition and storage areas
• Digital products, such as online exhibits, educational resources, and digital collections
• Professional development opportunities for museum staff, such as training and mentorship programs
The program is open to museums that are units of state, local, or tribal government, or are nonprofit with tax-exempt status, and whose primary purpose is African American life, art, history, and/or culture.
