The Lightweight Universal Codec (LUC) program aims to develop a universal encoder-decoder (codec) capable of sending and receiving information using any known communication error correction code and any developed in the future. The program will leverage the groundbreaking work of DARPA’s Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) study to create an adaptive error correction codec capable of multiple on-the-fly changes to error correction codes. The codec will be designed to optimize performance with respect to codes in dynamic environments, enabling significantly improved communications.
Key features of the LUC program include:
• Development of a universal encoder-decoder (codec) capable of sending and receiving information using any known communication error correction code and any developed in the future
• Leveraging the GRAND study to create an adaptive error correction codec capable of multiple on-the-fly changes to error correction codes
• Optimization of performance with respect to codes in dynamic environments
• Improved efficiency, security, throughput, and interoperability achieved through record-setting low-power decoding and adaptive, dynamic forward error correction
• Integration of the codec into various existing communication technologies to demonstrate improved efficiency, security, throughput, and interoperability.
