Description

The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) is soliciting applications from eligible federally‑recognized Native American tribal governments to fund the Tribal Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (SAUSA) Initiative for FY 2026. Each award provides up to $1.46 million for a tribe to partner with its U.S. Attorney’s Office to hire or retain an attorney who serves concurrently as a Tribal prosecutor and a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney. The purpose is to close jurisdictional gaps, improve coordination among tribal, federal, and state law‑enforcement agencies, and enhance the investigation and prosecution of Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) crimes in Indian country. Three awards are anticipated, with total estimated funding of $4.38 million. • Eligible applicants: Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Yurok Tribe of the Yurok Reservation (California) and other federally‑recognized tribal governments. • Funding: Up to $1,460,000 per award (floor and ceiling equal). • Application period: 1 September 2026 – 15 September 2026. • No cost‑sharing required. • Grants are awarded on a discretionary basis; award dates not specified. • Primary contact: Renee Stapp, OVW (email [email protected], phone (202) 307‑6026).

Budget estimate

$1,000,000 – $1,500,000

The program’s total estimated funding is $4,380,000 for three awards, with each award’s floor and ceiling set at $1,460,000. Assuming full award of the ceiling amount, a successful applicant could receive up to $1.46 million for a one‑year period. Realistically, award amounts may vary slightly below the ceiling, so a reasonable range is roughly $1 million to $1.5 million per award. Factors influencing the exact budget include the tribe’s proposed budget, the scope of attorney services, and any cost‑share or matching requirements (none required here).
