The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is seeking applications for a cooperative agreement to implement the Prosperous and Resilient Landscapes program in Guatemala. The program aims to reduce land-based greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon sequestration from land use. The activity will focus on four strategic approaches: forest conservation, sustainable forest management, and integrated fire management; applying climate-smart livestock practices; landscape restoration; and improving and expanding agroforestry systems and sustainable soil management practices. The program will work with local communities, civil society, and the private sector to reduce land-based emissions and increase carbon sequestration. Some key results of the program include:
• Reduced land-based greenhouse gas emissions through forest conservation and sustainable forest management
• Increased legal temporary and permanent employment through low emission livelihood activities for forest dependent communities
• Reduced land-based greenhouse gas emissions from the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) Sector
• Generate substantive changes in behaviors in support of low emission economic activities among forest dependent communities
The program will contribute to the USAID/Guatemala Country Development and Cooperation Strategy (CDCS) 2020-2025 and the U.S. Strategy for Addressing the Root Causes of Migration in Central America.
