Description

The U.S. Air Force 87th Contracting Squadron is conducting market research for handheld explosives trace detectors (ETDs) to support the 87th Security Forces Squadron at Joint Base McGuire‑Dix‑Lakehurst, NJ. The requirement calls for a lightweight (≤3.2 lb), non‑radioactive, five‑channel fluorescence detector capable of detecting a wide range of military, conventional, homemade, and liquid explosives at nanogram‑level concentrations. The system must operate in harsh environments (MIL‑STD‑810G, IP54), provide rapid alarm (10‑25 s), support hot‑swappable batteries for up to 16 hours of mission time, and include data logging, USB‑C, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity. Delivery of the detectors, batteries, power adapters, and initial sampling kits is required within 30 days of order receipt. Responses are due 24 August 2026. • Core technology: five‑channel fluorescence, no radioactive source • Detection limits: nanogram to sub‑nanogram for multiple explosive classes • Physical specs: ≤3.2 lb, MIL‑STD‑810G, IP54, 3‑minute cold start • Power: two 8‑hour hot‑swappable Li‑ion batteries, 16‑hour mission time • Interface: sunlight‑readable color display, video tutorials, audible/visual/haptic alerts • Connectivity: USB‑C, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, ≥3,500 hours data logging • Delivery: to JB MDL, NJ within 30 days of order • Response deadline: 24 August 2026, 1500 ET

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $600,000

No price is disclosed in the notice. Handheld explosives trace detectors typically range from $10,000 to $30,000 per unit, depending on capabilities and accessories. Assuming the Air Force may procure between 10 and 20 units (a reasonable quantity for a squadron’s entry‑control points), the total contract value could fall roughly between $100,000 and $600,000. This estimate accounts for unit cost, batteries, adapters, and initial sampling kits, as well as potential volume discounts or premium features.
