The Department of War (DoW) Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) for FY 2027 funds high‑risk basic research at U.S. universities across 16 interdisciplinary topics spanning optics, AI, quantum science, materials, energy, bio‑inspired systems, and more. Up to $1.5 M per year may be awarded for a five‑year period, supporting up to six faculty investigators per award. Proposals are optional white papers (due 20 Nov 2026) followed by full proposals (due 9 Apr 2027). Eligibility is limited to U.S. higher‑education institutions; industry can collaborate but cannot receive direct funds. The program aims to generate breakthrough science that can later transition to defense technologies.
