Description
The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (Division of Forestry & Fire Protection) has issued a final Best Interest Finding authorizing a competitive timber sale on Heceta Island (Southeast Alaska). Approximately 183 acres of mixed‑age forest containing about 7,440 MBF of western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and western red cedar will be offered for sale. The sale is intended to generate stumpage revenue for the State and support local employment through logging, road construction, and related activities. Access to the site will be via USFS 1445 Road and a short spur road on federal land. The harvest will be clear‑cut using shovel logging, with road and erosion controls, wildlife and cultural resource protections, and natural regeneration plans. The contract terms, including price appraisal and duration, will be set under Alaska timber‑sale statutes (AS 38.05.120).
