Description

The Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance is offering the FY 2026 “Assisting Neighborhoods and Governments with Enforcement of Laws (ANGEL)” grant. Funding up to $500,000 will support state, local, and tribal jurisdictions in hiring sworn and non‑sworn law‑enforcement personnel, retaining critical non‑law‑enforcement staff, and acquiring technology/equipment to combat violent crime by criminal illegal aliens, gangs, cartels, and related threats. Salaries may be funded for up to three years within a five‑year performance period, and equipment purchases may include surveillance, forensic, and officer‑safety tools. Eligible applicants include state agencies, counties, cities/townships, special districts, and recognized tribal governments. The grant seeks to bolster participation in Homeland Security Task Force activities and other DOJ anti‑gang/trafficking initiatives. • Maximum award ceiling: $500,000 (no minimum) • Open to a broad range of governmental entities (state, local, tribal) • Funds may be used for hiring/re‑hiring full‑time officers, civilian staff, and for technology/equipment procurement • Salary support up to 3 years; overall performance period up to 5 years • Application window: 24 Sep 2026 – 20 Oct 2026 • No cost‑sharing required • Award decision date not specified

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $500,000

The award ceiling is listed as $500,000 with no floor, indicating that grants could range from modest amounts up to the full ceiling. Assuming many applicants (≈50) and typical grant sizes for staffing and equipment, a realistic budget range is roughly $100,000 to $500,000 per award. Smaller jurisdictions may receive nearer the low end for limited staffing, while larger multi‑jurisdiction projects could secure the full ceiling for extensive hiring and technology purchases.
