Description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is seeking companies interested in obtaining license rights to commercialize, manufacture, and market the Lunar Experiment Support System and Handling (LESSH) Battery Charger Module (BCM). The LESSH BCM is a compact, high-performance, ruggedized system designed to support extended science operations in harsh lunar environments. It provides wired battery charging capabilities to astronauts on the lunar surface and offers seamless recharging and reliable hard-line data transfer. The technology is at readiness level 4 and is available for patent licensing. Key features of the LESSH BCM include: • A mass of 9.4 kg and dimensions of 50 x 25 x 10 cm • A 1.5-meter flexible harness with an EVA-compatible connector and removable dust cover • Astronaut-operated controls, such as a guarded power switch and LED indicators • Support for charging of 28V astronaut-rated batteries with a power output rated at 215W • Integration of a battery pre-heater to maintain optimal performance in extreme temperatures • A 4-hour charge time with software adjustability for charging parameters • Passive rebalancing of cell voltages and advanced safety features • 2-fault tolerant hardware and adjustable safety setpoints • Support for 1000BASE-T Ethernet pass-through for high-speed data transfer

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $1,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as it involves licensing a technology rather than a traditional procurement. However, the value of the license could depend on factors such as the company's intended use of the technology, the scope of the license, and the potential revenue generated by the commercialization of the LESSH BCM. A rough estimate could be in the range of $100,000 to $1 million, considering the costs associated with developing and commercializing a complex technology like the LESSH BCM.
