Description

NASA's Technology Transfer Program is seeking companies interested in obtaining license rights to commercialize, manufacture, and market a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sleeve technology that can prevent cell-to-cell propagation of thermal runaway events in lithium-ion battery cells. The technology has a technology readiness level (TRL) of 6 and is available for patent licensing. The CFRP sleeve provides multiple advantages over previous containment designs, including increased hazard safety, lower mass, reduced cost, lack of conductivity, and manufacture with readily available materials. Key features of the technology include: • Increased hazard safety • Lower mass • Reduced cost • Lack of conductivity • Manufacture with readily available materials • Compatibility with 18650 battery cells, which are widely used in commercially available products such as power tools, laptops, cameras, e-bikes, and electric cars.

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $10,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as it involves licensing a technology rather than a traditional procurement contract. However, the fact that NASA is seeking companies to commercialize and manufacture the technology suggests that there is potential for significant revenue generation. The global market for lithium-ion batteries is large and growing, with hundreds of billions of cells produced annually. If a company is able to successfully license and commercialize the CFRP sleeve technology, they may be able to generate significant revenue through sales of the technology. A rough estimate of the budget could be in the range of $100,000 to $10 million, depending on the terms of the license agreement and the company's ability to successfully commercialize the technology.
