Description

The Los Alamos National Laboratory is offering a technology licensing opportunity for PFAS-Free Sulfonated Poly(norbornene) Ionomeric Binders. This technology is a cleaner and more tunable alternative for hydrogen fuel cells and water electrolyzers. The binders are designed to replace traditional perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) materials, which contain "forever chemicals" that are under increasing regulatory pressure. The advantages of this technology include its PFAS-free composition, maintenance of catalyst activity, higher gas permeability, tunable hydrophobicity, and demonstrated thermal stability and mechanical durability. The potential market applications for this technology include hydrogen energy, transportation, stationary power and backup, industrial gas and chemicals, and aerospace and defense. • The technology is a drop-in replacement for traditional PFSA materials • It maintains catalyst activity and has higher gas permeability • It offers tunable hydrophobicity to prevent electrode flooding • It is built on a polymer platform with demonstrated thermal stability and mechanical durability • It has potential applications in various industries, including hydrogen energy, transportation, and aerospace and defense

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $1,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as it is a technology licensing agreement. However, the potential market applications for this technology are significant, and the licensing fees could be substantial. The budget could range from $100,000 to $1,000,000 or more, depending on the terms of the licensing agreement and the success of the technology in the market. The factors that may influence the likely payment range include the exclusivity of the licensing agreement, the royalty rates, and the potential for future development and commercialization of the technology.
