Description

The Engineering Biological and Biomedical Systems (EBBS) program supports research that expands our understanding of biological and physiological systems, and helps improve human health. The program focuses on the engineering of biological systems at every scale, from sensing biomarkers to making proteins and restoring functions of the body. The EBBS program supports studies of mechanisms that drive the behavior of microbial populations and cells, and of therapeutic cells and tissues. Research that enables the design of biological systems to sense and respond to novel stimuli is welcome. Projects that focus on testing and validating therapies are not supported, and clinical trials are not supported. • The program supports research that advances rehabilitation engineering through new theories and approaches. • The program supports research that creates novel biomedical technologies or achieves new understanding of physiological or pathological processes. • The program supports research that expands what is possible in biomanufacturing. • The program does not support proposals with a main goal of drug design, drug delivery, or the development of animal models of disease.

Budget estimate

$200,000 – $1,000,000

The budget for this grant is not explicitly stated, but based on the program's goals and the NSF's typical grant sizes, it is estimated to be in the range of $200,000 to $1,000,000. This estimate is based on the fact that the program supports research that creates novel biomedical technologies and advances rehabilitation engineering, which can be costly. Additionally, the NSF's grant sizes can vary widely depending on the program and the specific research being funded.
