Description

The Idaho National Laboratory is making available for licensing a composite vessel-shield technology for transportable microreactor systems. This technology consolidates the reactor vessel and radiation shield into a single, weight-optimized structural system, reducing the mass penalty associated with treating them as separate systems. The technology has potential applications in transportable microreactors, remote or off-grid installations, defense and space deployment, and domestic supply chains. The technology is available for licensing, and interested parties may contact the point of contact listed in the notice to request licensing information. Key features of the technology include: • Consolidation of vessel and shield into one structure, reducing mass penalty • Additively manufactured multilayered composites resist internal buckling • Tungsten and boron high-temperature ceramic fill within the core layer provide combined gamma-ray and neutron attenuation • Integration of the shield into the reactor vessel reduces volume and mass penalty

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $1,000,000

The budget for this licensing opportunity is difficult to estimate, as it depends on various factors such as the terms of the license agreement, the scope of the technology being licensed, and the potential applications of the technology. However, considering the potential applications of the technology in transportable microreactors, remote or off-grid installations, defense and space deployment, and domestic supply chains, the budget could be substantial. A rough estimate could be in the range of $100,000 to $1,000,000, depending on the specific terms of the license agreement and the potential revenue generated by the technology.
