Description
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) intends to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to facilitate the development of large pilot-scale facilities to recover domestic critical minerals and materials from operating industrial facilities. The goal is to leverage American industrial leadership to recover valuable mineral byproducts from existing industrial processes. The planned NOFO will focus investments on American industrial facilities that have the potential to produce valuable mineral byproducts. The technical objectives include the design, construction, and operation of pilot-scale critical minerals and materials recovery facilities at domestic industrial sites. The production of sustainable market-ready critical minerals and materials is preferred, and process automation and combined use of feedstock materials are also preferred.
• The NOFO will focus on two topic areas: Mines & Metal Pilots — Coal-Based Industry and Mines & Metals Pilots — All Industry.
• The total government funding for the NOFO is $250M, with awards ranging from $10M to $50M per award.
• The cost share percentage is expected to be between 20-50%.
• The beginning technology readiness level (TRL) is expected to be 5-6, and the ending TRL is expected to be 7.
• The plan for near-term (e.g., 2028-2030) process commercialization is required.
