The County of Humboldt is seeking a qualified consulting firm to provide professional planning and technical support services for the Humboldt Natural and Working Lands Carbon Stock and Management Study. The study aims to establish a baseline for the County's carbon stock and identify best management practices to maintain and/or increase carbon sequestration capacity in the region. The successful contractor will produce a comprehensive report quantifying and evaluating current and potential sequestration of biomass carbon and soil carbon, inform conservation planning, land management, and land use policy, and provide information to integrate into the 2030 update to the Regional Climate Action Plan (RCAP). The scope of work includes tasks such as project planning framework, stakeholder engagement, literature and data review, carbon stock inventory, and carbon sequestration feasibility study.
• The study will analyze existing natural and working lands, including forestlands, wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural lands.
• The study will evaluate the stability of existing carbon stocks and identify opportunities to optimize carbon sequestration through active restoration, land use changes, and land management activities.
• The study will provide a comprehensive report, including maps, data tables, and graphics, to clearly communicate complex science to the public.
• The study will inform conservation planning, land management, and land use policy aimed at achieving carbon neutrality.
• The study will be used by numerous County departments and partner agencies in future actions, such as tracking progress towards RCAP goals and objectives, developing strategies to optimize carbon sequestration, and updating CEQA thresholds for GHG emissions.
