Description

The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) is conducting market research to determine the amount of responsible sources that have the capability, experience, facilities, and potential solutions for the capability gap described in the Request for Information (RFI). The RFI seeks information on industry's capability to design, develop, qualify, and manufacture a solid-propellant propulsion system for a supersonic aerial target. The Government's objective is to leverage advanced manufacturing techniques, including Additive Manufacturing (AM), to enhance the propulsion industrial base, improve system affordability, and increase supply chain resilience. Some key points about the job and scope of work include: • The propulsion system should be a solid-propellant ducted rocket motor. • The system should be capable of boosting a target vehicle to supersonic speeds and sustaining flight at Mach 2.5 or greater at sea-skimming altitudes for a duration exceeding 60 seconds. • The system should have a form factor that integrates within a cylindrical envelope of approximately 15 inches in diameter and 120 inches in length. • The total system mass should not exceed 600 lbs. • The system should provide standard mechanical and electrical interfaces to the airframe. • The system should be qualified for all environmental conditions associated with naval carrier and shore-based operations.

Budget estimate

$10,000,000 – $50,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is not explicitly stated in the document. However, based on the information provided, we can make an educated estimate. The Government is considering awarding one or more Other Transaction Agreements (OTAs) for the development of a solid-propellant propulsion system for a supersonic aerial target. The development program is expected to include design, development, qualification, and manufacture of the propulsion system. The estimated budget can be influenced by factors such as the complexity of the system, the number of units to be produced, and the production rate. Assuming a development program with a moderate level of complexity and a production rate of 20-40 units per year, the estimated budget could be in the range of $10 million to $50 million.
