The Community Food Projects Competitive Grant Program (CFPCGP) seeks to improve food and nutrition security in low-income communities through a food systems approach and Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) framework. The program includes two types of projects: Community Food Projects (CFP) and Planning Projects (PP). CFPs are designed to create community-based food projects with objectives, activities, and outcomes that align with the CFPCGP primary goals. PPs are designed to complete plans toward the improvement of community food security. Key aspects of the program include:
* Eligibility is limited to public food program service providers, tribal organizations, or private nonprofit entities.
* Applicants must have experience in community food work, job training and business development, and efforts to reduce food insecurity.
* A Data Management Plan (DMP) is required for this program.
* Preference will be given to projects that develop linkages between sectors of the food system, support entrepreneurial projects, and develop innovative connections between the for-profit and nonprofit food sectors.
* Projects must involve low-income participants.
Some examples of CFPs include community gardens with market stands, value chain projects, food hubs, farmers’ markets, and marketing & consumer cooperatives. Examples of PPs include community food assessments, coordination of collaboration development plans, GIS analyses, food sovereignty studies, and farm-to-institution exploration.
