Description

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seeks cooperative‑agreement (U01) research proposals to advance medical countermeasures (MCMs) and related technologies for civilian radiological/nuclear or chemical threats. The effort supports the Radiation and Nuclear Countermeasures Program (RNCP) and the Chemical Countermeasures Program (CCRP). Applicants will develop injury models, biomarkers, diagnostic/triage tools, and pre‑clinical therapeutic candidates that can mitigate or treat acute and delayed effects of radiation or chemical exposure. The award will be a cooperative agreement, requiring close collaboration with NIH staff, annual benchmarks, and regular reporting (RPPR). Foreign entities are ineligible; only U.S. public, nonprofit, and for‑profit organizations may apply. The anticipated award start is July 1 2027, with a submission deadline of October 9 2028. • Focus: pre‑clinical and translational research on radiation or chemical exposure countermeasures. • Funding mechanism: U01 Cooperative Agreement (non‑clinical‑trial). • Eligible applicants: U.S. government, state/local, higher‑education, nonprofit, for‑profit, tribal, and small businesses. • Required deliverables: data management plan, annual progress reports, final close‑out reporting. • No cost‑sharing required.

Budget estimate

$1,000,000 – $5,000,000

NIH cooperative agreements for large‑scale biomedical research typically range from $1 million to $5 million per award, depending on scope, team size, and project length (often 2‑3 years). This RFA targets high‑impact countermeasure development, suggesting budgets toward the upper end of that range, especially for multi‑institution collaborations. Therefore, a reasonable estimate is $1‑5 million total award value.
