Description

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is seeking input from the scientific and technical community regarding the current state of autonomous science, particularly in biological domains, and on opportunities for investment to advance the field in service to national security and public benefit. The agency is looking for innovative insights into the current state of the art of autonomous biomedical science, the major challenges and opportunities of the discipline, and where targeted investment could have the greatest impact in advancing autonomous science. Some key areas of focus include: • Informatics Technologies for autonomous science • Physical Technologies for autonomous science • Current state of the art of autonomous science and transformational enabling technologies • Key technical, organizational, or operational bottlenecks in deploying autonomous science at scale or in new domains • Application areas in which new investments could have the greatest impact and best demonstrate the unique advantages of autonomous science • Safety and security considerations in the operation of highly automated labs • New technologies, opportunities, and challenges for maximizing productive interaction between human operators and autonomous agents in hybrid human-AI workflows

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $1,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as it is a request for information and not a solicitation for proposals. However, based on the scope of the project, which involves advancing autonomous science for biological applications, the budget could potentially be in the range of $100,000 to $1,000,000. This estimate is based on the assumption that the project will require significant research and development efforts, and that the agency will provide funding to support these efforts. The actual budget will depend on the specific requirements of the project and the agency's budget.
