Description

The Decatur Historical Commission and Depot Museum are seeking qualified contractors to restore a historic Kansas City Southern F‑7 locomotive and its accompanying bay‑window caboose, both listed on the National Historical Registry. The work includes corrosion removal, structural repairs, repainting, and interior refurbishment of the caboose. Bidders must submit proposals by the end of 2026, and the project will be evaluated in early 2027. • Remove rust spots from locomotive chassis, cab, and other exposed areas. • Repaint the entire locomotive in historically accurate colors. • Repair exterior rust on the caboose and replace interior plywood paneling. • Coordinate inspection visits with the commission’s curator prior to work commencement. • Submit complete bids by December 31 2026; reviews will occur in February 2027.

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $250,000

No specific contract amount is disclosed. Restoration of a full locomotive and caboose typically involves extensive metalwork, painting, and interior carpentry, which can range from low‑six figures to mid‑hundreds‑of‑thousands of dollars depending on condition and required materials. An estimated bid range of $100,000 to $250,000 is reasonable for this scope.
