The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a water purification system for the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. The system must provide high-purity water that reduces pitting and corrosion on instruments, reduces microbial fouling and scaling, and improves cleaning quality and efficiency. The scope of work includes pretreatment, principal water treatment process, and distribution. The system must be reliable, economical, and meet AAMI TIR 34 and SPS equipment manufacturer’s specifications for microbial and chemical quality.
The key features of the system include:
• Sediment filter, carbon filtration, and water softening for pretreatment
• Reverse osmosis (RO), deionization (DI), water quality sensors, bacteria filter, distillation, or a combination of these processes for principal treatment
• Distribution system with ultraviolet (UV) light and endotoxin filtration for continuous disinfection
• Storage tank for purified critical water with a tight-fitting lid and vented through a hydrophobic 0.2 μm air filter
• Multistage centrifugal pump made of inert materials for distribution
• Alarms for deionizer exhaustion or low water levels in the storage tank
