The National Park Service intends to award a single source justified cooperative agreement to the Great Basin Institute for the Archaeological Research Associates project. The project aims to recruit one intern to assist the park horticulturist with historic orchard management from 2019 to 2021. The intern will learn about horticulture science, cultural and natural resource management, and provide hands-on experience in orchard management. The project will also promote education, job training, and community involvement in natural and cultural resource protection.
Key aspects of the project include:
• Orchard management activities such as insect and pest monitoring, integrated pest management, cover crop management, and tree care
• Annual orchard condition assessments and vegetation monitoring
• Data entry and office work using Excel databases and ArcGIS
• Collaboration with park visitors to disseminate information about the orchards and assist with visitor engagement
• Emphasis on providing an enriching and rewarding experience for the intern, teaching about the park's environment, and providing hands-on experience working on cultural and natural resources projects
