The National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program (NPS ABPP) is offering grants for the restoration of day-of-battle conditions within eligible Civil War battlefields. The program aims to promote the preservation and interpretation of historic battlefields and associated sites of armed conflict. Two categories of grants are available: Scoping Grants for planning and implementation activities, and Implementation Grants for projects that have completed planning activities prior to application. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, public and private institutions of higher education, and nonprofit organizations. The grants require a dollar-for-dollar non-Federal match, and the Federal share for Scoping Grants should range from $30,000 to $100,000, while Implementation Grants should range from $50,000 to $750,000.
• Eligible properties are those located outside the external boundaries of a unit of the National Park System and have been protected with assistance from the NPS’s Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant Program or are owned by state or local government entities.
• Proposed activities must address and satisfy all applicable terms of executed preservation easements or preservation letters of agreement.
• Projects must occur on properties protected by an executed preservation easement or preservation letter of agreement.
• Activities intended to mitigate easement violations or adverse effects are not eligible for funding.
