Description

The National Fish Passage Program (NFPP) provides technical and financial assistance to state, local, tribal, nonprofit, and private partners for projects that remove or mitigate instream barriers, restore aquatic connectivity, and improve public safety and local economies. Up to $15 million is available for FY 2026‑27, with an expected 100 awards ranging from $1 to $1 million each. Projects may include culvert replacements, dam removals, floodplain restoration, fishway installations, and FRIMA‑funded fish‑screen upgrades in select western states. Applicants must register in SAM/UEI, submit a Grants.gov or GrantSolutions application by 11:59 PM ET on 30 April 2027, and may be required to provide a minimum 35 % non‑federal match for FRIMA projects. The program emphasizes ecological benefits for federal trust species, long‑term barrier removal, community safety, and leveraging partner match contributions. • Funding: $15 M total, up to $1 M per award, 100 awards anticipated. • Eligible entities: State/local agencies, Tribes, NGOs, other federal agencies, private landowners (unrestricted). • No cost‑sharing required except for FRIMA projects (minimum 35 % match). • Application deadline: 30 April 2027; opening date 26 August 2026. • Anticipated project period: 10 Oct 2026 – 1 May 2031 (≈5 years). • Required registrations: SAM/UEI, Grants.gov (or GrantSolutions). • Primary contact: Alexander Jones (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service).

Budget estimate

$10,000 – $1,000,000

The program’s total funding envelope is $15 million with an expected 100 awards, yielding an average award size of $150,000. However, the ceiling per award is $1 million and the floor is $1, so individual project funding can vary widely. Most typical projects (e.g., culvert replacements, small‑scale habitat restoration) receive between $10 k and $250 k, while larger, multi‑year watershed projects can approach the $1 M ceiling. Therefore, a realistic budget range for a single award is roughly $10,000 – $1,000,000, depending on project scope, match contributions, and FRIMA eligibility.
