Description

The Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) is offering a statewide grant program to fund planning and implementation projects that improve wildlife corridors and fish passage across California. Up to $10 M in total funding is available, with grant terms of 2‑4 years, and the program is open to nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and tribal governments. Projects may involve constructing wildlife over‑ and under‑crossings, restoring habitat screens, removing instream barriers, installing fish‑friendly culverts or ladders, adding fencing, and providing design and environmental review for future restoration work, especially at sites identified on CDFW priority lists. Preference is given to projects that address drought‑exacerbated barriers and that include a cost‑share component, though matching funds are not mandatory. Applications require a Letter of Intent and must be submitted through an online portal; guidelines are provided on the WCB website. • Eligible applicants: nonprofit, public agency, tribal government (statewide). • Funding: up to $10,000,000 total; award amounts variable; advances + reimbursements. • Priorities: (1) high‑impact crossings, barrier removal, design for listed sites; (2) fencing and design for non‑listed sites. • Project duration: 2‑4 year grant term. • No mandatory cost‑share, but higher cost‑share scores better. • Application: Letter of Intent required; online submission; grant guidelines must be reviewed.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $5,000,000

The program lists a total estimated funding pool of $10 M, but the number of awards is “Dependent.” Assuming 5‑15 awards (a typical range for statewide environmental grant programs), the average award could fall between $500,000 and $2,000,000. Projects with larger scopes (e.g., full‑scale overcrossings) could command up to $5 M, while smaller planning or design studies might be under $500 k. Therefore, a realistic budget range for a single award is roughly $500,000 – $5,000,000, depending on project scale, matching funds, and competitive scoring.
