Description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is seeking a contractor to develop a custom textile prototype for use in lunar spacesuit applications. The contractor will collaborate with NASA to develop an advanced coating system applied to custom-woven fabrics, with a focus on optimization of the finishing processes, including calendaring and the application of a high-performance coating and/or film laminate. The scope of work includes addressing requirements related to fabric hand, flame resistance, electrostatic discharge (ESD) performance, interlaminar peel strength, and abrasion resistance. The contractor will provide various deliverables, including project kickoff meeting and monthly technical status updates, updated test plan and test matrix, scale-up and manufacturability assessment, interim coated fabric samples, and five linear yards of the final optimized coated fabric solution. • The contractor will optimize the coating system based on prior test data and development experience. • The contractor will provide representative fabric specimens to NASA in support of downstream fabric validation testing. • The contractor will conduct a scaling and industrialization assessment of the proposed coating/laminate system. • The contractor will refine the coating/film formulation based on lessons learned from previous testing and development activities. • The contractor will maintain the lowest achievable stiffness at both ambient and cryogenic temperatures.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $2,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is likely to be in the range of $500,000 to $2 million, based on the scope of work and the fact that it is a research and development project. The contractor will be required to provide various deliverables, including project kickoff meeting and monthly technical status updates, updated test plan and test matrix, scale-up and manufacturability assessment, interim coated fabric samples, and five linear yards of the final optimized coated fabric solution. The contractor will also be required to conduct a scaling and industrialization assessment of the proposed coating/laminate system, which may involve significant resources and investment. However, the exact budget amount is not specified in the document, and the estimate provided here is based on general industry trends and the scope of work. Factors that may influence the likely payment range include the complexity of the project, the level of expertise required, and the resources needed to complete the scope of work.
