Description

The Idaho National Laboratory, via Battelle Energy Alliance, seeks qualified firms to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the design and build of a radiation shielding system (RRS) for the SR‑1 Freedom interplanetary spacecraft’s nuclear power module. The RRS must weigh less than 1,200 kg, operate in the vacuum of space from –273 °C to 800 °C, and survive launch loads while shielding neutron and gamma radiation for four critical subsystems. Qualified firms must demonstrate experience in radiation‑shielding material design, transport modeling, fabrication of complex geometries, testing/qualification, and compliance with ISO 9001‑2015 and ANSI/ASQC C1‑1996 quality standards. Selected firms may receive a formal RFP later in 2026, with a firm‑fixed‑price contract awarded in progressive phases and final project completion required by July 2027. • Design and fabricate a < 1,200 kg radiation shield for the SR‑1 nuclear power module. • Ensure performance from –273 °C to 800 °C and survive launch vibration/acceleration. • Interface with reactor structure, control‑drum actuators, heat‑management system heat pipes, and power‑conversion system. • Provide radiation‑transport analysis, material testing plans, and ISO‑compliant quality program. • Submit a ≤20‑page EOI by 24 Sep 2026; successful responders may be invited to a later RFP.

Budget estimate

$2,000,000 – $8,000,000

No contract value is disclosed. Based on the complexity of space‑qualified radiation shielding, the need for specialized materials, testing, and a firm‑fixed‑price design/build contract lasting roughly 10 months, a realistic award could range from a few million dollars to low‑single‑digit millions. Factors influencing the amount include material costs, engineering labor, testing facilities, and any subcontracting for specialized aerospace manufacturing.
