The National Park Service intends to award a single source justified cooperative agreement to Montana State University for the production of a comprehensive Historic Resource Study for Devils Tower National Monument. The study will provide a foundation document that fulfills the National Historic Preservation Act Section 110 requirements to identify and document historic properties, as well as provide a baseline for assessing and evaluating impacts to historic properties. The project will involve exhaustive research, fieldwork, oral histories, and collaboration between the NPS and its partner. The study will include the collection, evaluation, synthesis, and presentation of data and research findings on the history themes and historic resources of the park and area.
Some key aspects of the project include:
• The production of a multi-chapter narrative history and context for evaluating and interpreting the significance of the historic resources associated with the extensive historical life of Devils Tower
• The creation of a comprehensive GIS mapping of resource zones by context
• The synthesis of cultural resource information from different cultural resource disciplines in a narrative designed to serve managers, planners, interpreters, cultural resource specialists, and the interested public
• The provision of technical guidance to faculty investigators and graduate students
• The collaboration between the NPS and its partner to provide available background information for Devils Tower NM and to coordinate field site visits
