The National Park Service intends to award a single source justified cooperative agreement to the San Antonio Zoo for the project "Protect Mexican blindcat and rare cave species by continuing investigation". The project aims to perform biological inventories of cave fauna, understand the distribution and conservation status of the federally endangered Mexican blindcat, and develop a cave management plan. The recipient will be responsible for fieldwork, providing expert opinion, and maintaining and accessioning collected cave specimens. The NPS will provide logistical support, review data, and ensure the protection of sensitive cave resources.
• The project will advance scientific understanding of the Mexican blindcat's distribution and status on public lands.
• The project will guide the park in providing public education and interpretative material on the critical links between aquifer health and human health.
• The project will assess the health of the aquifer in Amistad National Recreation Area and its relation to water quality and quantity.
• The project will support the conservation of rare cave species and the development of a cave management plan.
