The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is providing guidance for grants to assess and clean up brownfield sites. The EPA’s Brownfields Program provides funds to empower states, communities, tribes, and nonprofit organizations to prevent, inventory, assess, clean up, and reuse brownfield sites. This opportunity is for Cleanup Grants, which provide funding to carry out cleanup activities on brownfield sites owned by the applicant. The maximum amount of EPA funds that will be awarded under a Cleanup Grant is $500,000.
• The applicant must be the sole owner of the site(s) that is the subject of its Cleanup Grant application and must own the site(s) by October 28, 2020, to be eligible to receive a Cleanup Grant.
• The applicant must have an ASTM E1903-19 Phase II environmental site assessment report(s) or equivalent site investigation report(s) complete that indicates a basic understanding of what contaminants need to be cleaned up on each site.
• The applicant must provide a 20% cost share for Cleanup Grants.
• Grant funds may be used for direct costs associated with the cleanup of a brownfield site, programmatic management of the grant, and other eligible activities.
• Grant funds cannot be used for the payment of direct costs for proposal preparation, a penalty or fine, a federal cost share requirement, administrative costs, and other ineligible activities.
