The National Park Service intends to award a single source justified cooperative agreement to the University of Montana for the Native American Student Internship Program. The program aims to provide Native American university/college students with hands-on experience in natural and cultural resource management in Yellowstone National Park. The program will create seven internship placements for American Indian university students across the park's natural and cultural resource programs. The University of Montana will be responsible for recruiting Native American students, orienting and mentoring them, and conducting a report on the project's successes and challenges. The National Park Service will provide federal oversight, technical assistance, and coordination with the university.
Key aspects of the program include:
• Providing internship placements for Native American students in natural and cultural resource management
• Creating a coordinated effort between federal agencies and universities to recruit, train, and retain Native Americans in the NPS workforce
• Developing an increased public understanding of the natural and cultural resources within Yellowstone National Park
• Providing technical support for resource management programs at Yellowstone National Park
• Assisting the park with meeting its legal and regulatory obligations and NPS mission to maintain, rehabilitate, and perpetuate the inherent integrity of the park's natural and cultural resources
