The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FERMILAB) is seeking information regarding an alternative concept for the Near Detector Complex (NDC) as part of the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Project. The alternative concept involves replacing two drop shafts and an underground cavern with a single or multiple larger shafts. The purpose of this Request for Information (RFI) is to obtain industry input on the feasibility and potential cost savings of this alternative concept. Interested parties are invited to submit responses to a series of questions regarding the alternative concept, including its potential impact on construction cost and schedule.
• The alternative concept involves replacing two drop shafts and an underground cavern with a single or multiple larger shafts.
• The larger shafts would be approximately 210ft deep and require approximately 80ft of soil excavation depth and approximately 130ft of rock excavation depth.
• The overall quantity of soil and rock excavation would be reduced by a small margin.
• The alternative concept would eliminate the need for an underground cavern, but would require a vertical transport system for the detectors.
• The RFI seeks input on the potential cost savings and schedule efficiency of the alternative concept.
