Description

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals to explore and implement mechanisms that amplify and increase the rates of nuclear fusion reactions in solids at and near room temperature. The goal of the Mechanisms for Amplification of fusion Reaction Rates in Solids (MARRS) program is to gain a predictive and quantitative understanding of the limits of fusion rate amplification in solids at or near room temperature. Proposers will investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. The program will have two phases, each lasting 18 months, with a review after 12 months and a final review at the end of the second phase. Proposers must describe their approaches to theory, modeling, and experimentation, and must demonstrate multidisciplinary capabilities and expertise across all required science and technology areas. Some key points include: • The MARRS program will explore mechanisms for amplifying fusion reaction rates in solids, including electron screening potentials, fuel loading techniques, and triggers. • Proposers must describe their approaches to theory, modeling, and experimentation, and must demonstrate multidisciplinary capabilities and expertise. • The program will have two phases, each lasting 18 months, with a review after 12 months and a final review at the end of the second phase. • Proposers must identify all major risks involved and clearly describe how they will mitigate those risks early in the proposed effort.

Budget estimate

$1,000,000 – $5,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is likely to be in the range of $1 million to $5 million, based on the scope of the project and the funding available for the MARRS program. The program is expected to have multiple awards, and the funding will be allocated based on the proposals received and the evaluation criteria outlined in the solicitation. The budget will depend on the specific proposal and the award instrument used, which could be a procurement contract, cooperative agreement, or other transaction agreement.
