Description

The State Water Resources Control Board’s Emergency Drinking Water / Cleanup & Abatement Account (CAA) grant provides funding to nonprofit, public agency, and tribal entities for projects that (1) clean up or abate waste impacts on California waters, or (2) address urgent drinking‑water needs caused by drought, contamination, or other emergencies. Funding is drawn from a $9.7 million pool and is awarded on a continuous basis, with a typical performance period of two years. Eligible applicants must be nonprofit, public agency, or tribal governments (including disadvantaged tribal communities) and may not be limited to any specific geographic region. The grant is reimbursable, does not require matched funding or a letter of intent, and is funded entirely by state sources. Applications are submitted online through the Water Board’s portal. • Eligible applicants: nonprofit, public agency, tribal government (including DACs). • Funding purpose: water‑quality cleanup/abatement and urgent drinking‑water projects. • Total available funding: $9,700,000 (award count dependent). • Period of performance: 2 years per award. • Funding method: reimbursement. • No matched‑funding or LOI requirement. • Continuous application window; no fixed deadline. • Contact: (916) 319‑9066, [email protected].

Budget estimate

$250,000 – $5,000,000

The grant program has a total pool of $9,700,000 and the number of awards is listed as “Dependent.” Assuming the agency distributes the funds across multiple projects, individual award amounts could range from modest pilot projects (~$250,000) to larger regional clean‑up efforts (~$5,000,000). The actual budget will depend on project scope, applicant capacity, and the competitive pool.
