Description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate (SMD) has released its annual omnibus Research Announcement (NRA), Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) – 2022. This program element is focused on Exobiology. Proposals may be submitted at any time, pending certain eligibility timing issues related to resubmissions and duplicate proposal avoidance. The typical period of performance for an award is three years, but some programs may allow up to five years and others specify shorter periods. • Proposers must be affiliated with an institution at nspires.nasaprs.com/ and, in general, NASA provides funding only to US institutions. • Organizations outside the U.S. that propose on the basis of a policy of no-exchange-of-funds; consult the Guidebook for Proposers for specific details. • Awards will be made as grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, and inter- or intra-agency transfers, depending on the nature of the work proposed, the proposing organization, and/or program requirements.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $5,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is not explicitly stated, but based on the typical period of performance for an award (three years) and the fact that awards will be made as grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, and inter- or intra-agency transfers, we can estimate the budget to be in the range of $500,000 to $5 million. This estimate is based on the assumption that the average annual funding for a research project in space and Earth sciences is around $200,000 to $1 million. The actual budget may vary depending on the nature of the work proposed, the proposing organization, and/or program requirements.
