Description

This NIH Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites exploratory and developmental clinical neuroscience research focused on the neurobiological mechanisms of Substance Use Disorders (SUD). Applicants may request a phased R61/R33 award: an initial R61 phase (up to 2 years) to generate pilot data, followed by an optional R33 phase (up to 5 years) for expanded studies. The award supports basic, translational, and implementation research, including circuitry, behavior, and potential therapeutic targets. Up to six awards are anticipated. Eligible entities include U.S. and foreign non‑U.S. organizations, nonprofits, small businesses, tribal governments, and academic institutions. Applications are submitted electronically via ASSIST/Grants.gov, with a final deadline of 5 PM local time on June 16 2028. Review begins March 2027, with award decisions expected April 2027. Recipients must submit annual progress reports (RPPR) and a data‑management plan.

Budget estimate

$300,000 – $2,500,000

NIH R61 awards typically fund up to $300,000 per year for a maximum of two years (≈ $600,000 total). The optional R33 phase can fund up to $500,000 per year for up to five years (≈ $2.5 million). Assuming a balanced mix of projects that transition to R33, the total award portfolio could range from $500,000 (single R61 award) to $3 million (one R61 plus full R33). For a single applicant, expected funding could be between $300,000 and $2.5 million depending on phase and scope.
