Testing of Odor-Reducing Chemical Treatment for Municipal Sludge

The City of Ann Arbor is seeking a qualified vendor to conduct Phase 1 laboratory‑scale jar testing of primary and thickened waste‑activated sludge to evaluate chemical treatments that reduce odor. The effort includes developing a sampling plan, characterizing sludge, selecting candidate chemicals, performing controlled jar‑tests, measuring odor reduction (both analytical and sensory), and delivering a comprehensive final report with dosage recommendations and a Phase 2 pilot design. This work will inform a future pilot‑scale demonstration and ultimately support the City’s goal of meeting strict odor‑impact standards at its wastewater treatment facility. • Develop sampling and analytical plan for sludge (solids, pH, ORP, sulfide, etc.). • Identify and evaluate commercially available odor‑control chemicals (oxidizers, binders, pH adjusters, masking agents, bio/enzymatic products). • Conduct replicated jar‑tests, apply odor measurement methods, and produce raw data and analysis. • Deliver Phase 1 testing plan, laboratory results, and a final report that includes dosage recommendations, cost estimates, and Phase 2 pilot design.
