Description

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Central Energy Resources Science Center seeks a qualified commercial laboratory to perform mineralogical analyses on 150 geologic core samples from the Alaska North Slope. The work includes quantitative cation exchange capacity (CEC) measurements and whole‑rock X‑ray diffraction (XRD) with full‑pattern fitting for all samples, plus detailed clay‑type and interstratification analysis on a subset of 30 samples. The vendor must prepare samples, conduct analyses within an 8‑week turnaround per batch, provide raw data files and Excel summary sheets, and return any remaining material at USGS expense. The contract is a firm‑fixed‑price purchase order with a performance period of one year (09/24/2026 – 09/23/2027).

Budget estimate

$40,000 – $60,000

Based on typical market rates for specialized geochemical laboratory work, a CEC + XRD analysis per sample averages $150‑$250, while the detailed clay‑type analysis adds roughly $300‑$400 per sample. For 150 standard samples (≈$30,000 – $37,500) plus 30 detailed samples (≈$9,000 – $12,000), total direct costs fall between $39,000 and $49,500. Adding overhead, profit margin, and administrative fees (≈20‑30%) brings the likely contract value to roughly $45,000 – $65,000.
