Description

The North Shore Land Alliance is seeking proposals for installing green infrastructure to manage stormwater runoff at its eight-acre waterfront remediated former ExxonMobil property at 95 Shore Road, Cold Spring Harbor. The work will entail restoring natural shoreline habitat, repairing an eroded gully and outfall and installing a bio-infiltration system. The property lies within the municipal boundaries of the Town of Huntington, and the Incorporated Village of Lloyd Harbor municipal boundary line is located just north of the parcel. It is being restored as prairie, wet meadow, maritime shrubland, beach and dune eco-types, and is currently providing open space, shoreline habitat and a small grassland along the Harbor. Current stormwater management in the area is insufficient, causing stormwater flows of +/-35 cubic feet/second to be conveyed through 95 Shore Road during large storm events. This volume of runoff has led to flooding of the northern area of the property during moderate to large storm events, as well as the creation of a 15' wide by 2-3' deep gully just upstream of the existing outfall. Our goal is to reduce stormwater volume and velocity as well as pathogens contamination of Cold Spring Harbor through installation of a bio-filtration system that will add to the native habitat already protected there. The current volume of runoff has led to flooding of the northern area of the property during moderate to large storm events, as well as the creation of a 15' wide by 2-3' deep gully just upstream of the existing outfall. This project will entail · installing a bioswale along the property’s north boundary with three riprap-lined chutes from a neighboring driveway to convey runoff to the bioswale which will be lined with a turf reinforcement mat and planted with salt marsh grasses and shrubs · repairing an eroded gully with live willow stake riprap · overhauling an existing culvert and outfall at the property boundary · stabilizing bioswale overflow with stone and mortar riprap · reconstruction of crushed stone berm · conducting habitat restoration along 530 linear feet (approximately 21,000 square feet) of shoreline through management of Phragmites and black locust trees and saplings and planting with native shrubs and grasses.
