The National Park Service intends to award a task agreement under a previously competed or single source master cooperative agreement to HistoriCorps for the project titled "Youth and Volunteer Project to Restore Mount Harkness Fire Lookout at Lassen Volcanic National Park." The project aims to educate and train youth participants and volunteers in historic preservation through hands-on skill training in restoring, rehabilitating, and stabilizing Mount Harkness Fire Lookout at Lassen Volcanic National Park. The project will be completed in four five-day work sessions with seven days to mobilize/demobilize and travel to/from the jobsite.
Some key aspects of the project include:
• Repairs necessary to preserve the structure and limit further deterioration of historic components
• Replacing the mortar cap on top of the stone walls and repairing damaged and missing mortar joints
• Rebuilding the stairs using NPS in-kind materials
• Repairing door and window frames using consolidates and Dutchman techniques
• Preserving historic fabric as much as possible
• Repointing the entire building and finishing exterior wood components with exterior-grade NPS-brown paint, if time allows
