The National Park Service is providing public notice of its intention to award financial assistance for the Oasis of Mara Traditional Cultural Property Study Phase 3: Report Writing. The project aims to produce a Traditional Cultural Property (TCP) Report that synthesizes oral traditions, published literature, and archival materials associated with the Oasis of Mara and Queen Mountain. The report will provide information on the important characteristics of the Oasis of Mara as they relate to the Native American communities who consider this a Traditional Cultural Property, and identify those features and characteristics that should be preserved, maintained, and restored.
Some key aspects of the project include:
• The production of a synthetic TCP report that meets the guidelines established in NPS-28 and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s guidance on Traditional Cultural Properties.
• The identification of key features, resources, and values of cultural, spiritual, and religious significance to associated Native American communities.
• The provision of management recommendations for how Joshua Tree National Park can preserve and restore important aspects of the Oasis of Mara.
• The collaboration between the National Park Service and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians to complete the project.
