The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) is seeking applications for a cooperative agreement to advance behavioral health in corrections. The project aims to bridge the gap between existing behavioral health institutional policies, sufficient staff training, and structured evidence-based behavioral health care approaches. The recipient will conduct a comprehensive gap analysis, review policies, engage stakeholders, and develop a dynamic behavioral health training e-course for correctional staff. The project will also establish a sustainable framework for ongoing staff education and professional development.
Key aspects of the project include:
• Conducting a gap analysis and developing a white paper assessing the delivery, availability, and quality of behavioral health services in correctional settings
• Reviewing policies related to behavioral health care management and recommending policy development or improvements
• Engaging stakeholders in a collaborative focus group to ensure a coordinated and sustainable approach to behavioral health services
• Developing and launching an in-depth e-course for correctional staff covering trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and cognitive-behavioral strategies
• Establishing a sustainable framework for ongoing staff education and professional development via NIC’s learning platforms
