Description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate (SMD) has released its annual omnibus Research Announcement (NRA), Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) – 2021. This program element, titled "Planetary Instrument Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations," is one of the individual program elements within ROSES. The goal of this program is to support the development of new instrument concepts for future planetary missions. Proposals may be submitted at any time, pending certain eligibility timing issues related to resubmissions and duplicate proposal avoidance. Awards will be made as grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, and inter- or intra-agency transfers, depending on the nature of the work proposed. • Proposals may be submitted by organizations of every type, Government and private, for profit and not-for-profit, domestic and foreign (with some caveats). • The typical period of performance for an award is three years, but some programs may allow up to five years and others specify shorter periods. • Proposers must be affiliated with an institution at nspires.nasaprs.com/ and, in general, NASA provides funding only to US institutions. • Questions concerning general ROSES-2021 policies and procedures may be directed to Max Bernstein, Lead for Research, Science Mission Directorate, at [email protected].

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $5,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as the document does not provide a specific award amount. However, considering that the typical period of performance for an award is three years, and some programs may allow up to five years, the award amount could be substantial. Additionally, the fact that NASA provides funding for a wide range of research and technology in space and Earth sciences suggests that the award amount could be in the range of hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. A rough estimate could be between $500,000 and $5,000,000, depending on the scope and complexity of the proposed project.
