The City of Salem is seeking qualifications and proposals from artists or artist-led teams to develop artwork for the Salem Civic Center Improvement Project. The project has a budget of approximately $130,000 and includes design, artist(s)'s fees, fabrication, transportation, installation, permits, and documentation. The selected artist will be responsible for the installation of completed works of art, including engineering attachments of art to the proposed art location. The project aims to enrich the built environment of the overall Civic Center campus and the surrounding community, create elements that encourage social connection and interaction, and add visual interest in a monochromatic indoor/outdoor space.
• The project is part of a $300 million community improvement bond.
• The artwork should reflect and echo the key themes underlying the public's use of Civic Center, such as civic engagement and discourse, openness and transparency, resilience, and Salem's position as Oregon's State Capital.
• The selected artwork(s) should enhance the monumentality of the brutalist architectural experience, creating a meaningful interaction between the structure and its environment.
• The artwork should be designed and constructed with safety, security, durability, and vandal resistance in mind.
• The project has two potential locations for site-specific artwork within the covered atrium area of City Hall.
