Description

The Particulate and Multiphase Processes program supports fundamental research on physico-chemical phenomena that govern particulate and multiphase systems. The program encourages transformative research to improve our basic understanding of particulate and multiphase processes with emphasis on research that demonstrates how particle-scale phenomena affect the behavior and dynamics of larger-scale systems. Some major research areas of interest include multiphase flow phenomena, particle science and technology, multiphase transport in biological systems, and interfacial transport. Key aspects of this opportunity include: * Support for fundamental research on physico-chemical phenomena in particulate and multiphase systems * Emphasis on transformative research that improves understanding of particle-scale phenomena and their effects on larger-scale systems * Encouragement of collaborative and interdisciplinary proposals * Focus on research with potential applications in advanced manufacturing, energy harvesting, transport in biological systems, biotechnology, or environmental sustainability

Budget estimate

$600,000 – $5,000,000

The estimated funding for this opportunity is $8,285,000. The duration of unsolicited proposal awards in CBET is generally up to three years. Single-investigator award budgets typically include support for one graduate student and up to one month of PI time per year. Awards for multiple investigator projects are typically larger. Based on this information, the budget for a single-investigator project could be around $200,000 to $500,000 per year, depending on the scope of the project and the number of personnel involved. For a three-year project, the total budget could be around $600,000 to $1,500,000. For larger, multiple-investigator projects, the budget could be significantly higher, potentially in the range of $1,000,000 to $5,000,000 or more over the course of the project, depending on the complexity and scope of the research.
